People often ask:

  • What are we looking for?
  • Why do we need X-rays?
  • Why make appointments for check up every 6 months?
The following case shows how a seemingly small cavity that had not been checked for 2½ years becomes a bigger problem, which could eventually involve the nerve of the tooth (RCT or extraction) and the need for a crown.

Regular check ups keep treatment simpler

Examining the tooth a small cavity
is detected.

A digital x-ray also shows the presence
of a cavity, the white spots on the x-ray
show amalgam fillings.

A digital X-ray can be enhanced to
show this cavity more clearly.

A seemingly small cavity in the enamel,
tunnels through the enamel and when
it reaches the dentine it spreads
towards the nerve.

Once the decay in the enamel is removed...

it reveals extensive decay in the dentine...

There is still some decay evident.

Once all the decay has been removed
a filling can be placed.
